Council Highlights - June 28, 2021
  • Regional District of Central Kootenay staff, Amy Wilson and Uli Wolf, presented on the draft Resource Recovery Plan. The plan is intended to reduce waste sent to landfill, address the climate emergency, and ensure that we have a sustainable waste management system that meets our needs for years to come.   • Council approved the release of the 2020 Annual Report to the public, including the Audited Financial Statements. The report is available for review and public inspection at City Hall and castlegar.ca/annualreport. Council will consider the 2020 Annual Report at its July 19, 2021 Regular Council Meeting at 7 p.m. online via Zoom. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.
  • Council adopted Zoning Amendment Bylaw 1355 and Official Community Plan Amendment Bylaw 1354 to support the development of a six-unit multi-family development, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, on a City-owned parcel located at 560 8th Street.
  • Council gave First and Second reading of Official Community Plan (OCP) Amendment Bylaw 1352 to update the language of the OCP to align with the Local Government Act and permit Temporary Use Permits in all land use designations. This has been referred to a Public Hearing set for July 19, 2021, at 6 p.m.
  • Council adopted the Wildlife Attractant Control Amendment Bylaw 1358.
  • Council approved the Bear Smart Community Dumpster Pilot Project to run from July 1 – November 30, 2021.
  • Council referred Zoning Amendment Bylaw 1359 a Bylaw to change the zoning of 3705 Columbia Avenue from Public and Institutional Zone (P-1) to Single Residential (R-1) to a Public Hearing set for July 19, 2021, at 6 p.m.
  • Tristan Wheeler presented to Council the proposal to appoint a Poet Laureate for the City of Castlegar. Council directed staff to bring forward a report exploring the process of appointing a poet laureate for the City of Castlegar.
  • Council passed a resolution for the Mayor to send a letter to Pope Francis requesting that he issue a formal apology for the harm that the Catholic Church inflicted on the innocent Indigenous children and their families that attended the Kamloops Indian Residential School in Kamloops, BC, Canada, and that Pope Francis be requested to attend in person on the grounds of the school to issue the apology,
  • Council passed a resolution to change the start time of the Committee of the Whole Meetings to 3 p.m. effective September 7, 2021.
