Throughout May and June 2023, the City of Castlegar engaged with community groups and citizens on what is important to them as we develop the City’s future direction.
Development Services
The feedback we received through on-line and hardcopy Community Workbooks and face-to-face conversations has been summarized in a What We Heard Report that will help inform emerging direction and land use ideas.
Where We are Heading
After hearing from hundreds of citizens at our workshops, pop-up events, and Community Workbooks, we have crafted 5 key priorities for the City’s future direction and vision. The 5 priorities are:
Focus Growth in Key Nodes
By establishing three types of nodes: City Activity Nodes (downtown and midtown), District Nodes, and Neighbourhood Nodes.
Protect & Restore Ecosystems
By limiting development within natural and hazard areas to ensure smart development where there are increased risks and complexity.
Create a Dynamic Columbia Avenue Corridor
With a rapid bus transit line, more mixed-use development, and improved gathering places.
Diversify the City’s Neighbourhoods
Through more attached and affordable housing forms as well as park space and amenities.
Nurture an Active City
Via increased pathways, sidewalks, bike lanes, and other facilities that promote active transportation and recreation.
Future Vision Map
The 5 key priorities for the City’s direction have been translated into a future vision map that we call the Community Strategy.

We want your feedback on these 5 priorities (and more). Join the project team at an upcoming community event between October 31 and November 2, 2023 to learn about what this means for Castlegar’s future. There will be opportunities to give feedback and ask questions. If you are not able to join us in person, a survey will be available launching at the same time as these events. We look forward to hearing from you!
