In BC, it is easy to responsibly recycle many things to keep them out of the landfill. Oil and tires, appliances, old paint, unused or expired medication, and so much more.
Castlegar Return-It Recycling Depot
- Refundable beverage containers (aluminum, plastic, drink boxes, gable top, glass, bi-metal, pouch, milk cartons, etc.)
- Electronics (display devices, phones, audio systems, computers and accessories, printers, etc.)
- Small appliances (blenders, clocks, coffee makers, fans, hair dryers, sewing machines, vacuum cleaners, etc.)
Ootischenia Landfill
- All items accepted at the curbside (paper, plastic containers, cardboard, tin and metal cans, etc.)
- Flexible plastics (bags, overwrap, food storage)
- Crinkly cellophane wrap (candy, chip bags, etc.)
- Glass bottles or jars
- Plastic packaging foam and trays for meat/produce
- Large appliances (refrigerators, ovens, freezers, etc.)
- Propane cylinders

Nelson Leafs Recycling Centre
The Nelson Leafs Recycling Centre is the first Eco-Depot in the RDCK. The depot accepts refundable beverage containers and a wide range of materials managed through product stewardship programs and household hazardous waste (HHW) that is currently not covered by any program.
