Most of the nuisance odours from the SSTP are generated in the solids or sludge management system. This is caused by the breakdown or decomposition of organic material under anaerobic (lack of oxygen) conditions. Sludge that is dewatering in the Geotubes is high in organics. When the Geotubes are being filled or excavated out, significant odours can be prevalent.

Staff are working with technical experts to improve performance and are exploring the viability of other biosolids dewatering solutions, which could help reduce odours.

The South Sewage Treatment Plant is part of the City’s broader Liquid Waste Management Plan, which establishes a long-term approach to managing wastewater, biosolids, and stormwater.
