Water Restrictions

Summer presents special water system problems in Castlegar. Excessive water use during Summer can impact the City’s main water supply and storage for firefighting purposes.


June 15 to September 15

$50 fine Levied for Non-Compliance. Under the City’s Municipal Ticketing Bylaw, a $50 fine can be issued for prohibited sprinkling/irrigation.

Water Sprinkling & Car Washing Restricted to Every 2nd Day

  • Residents at odd number addresses (ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 OR 9) water on odd number calendar days
    Residents at even number addresses (ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 OR 8) water on even number calendar days
  • Morning 5:00 am to 11:00 am
  • Evening 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Timers & Underground Timed Sprinkler Systems Also Restricted to Every 2nd Day Schedule

  • Overnight 11:00 pm to 5:00 am

Did You Know?

Daily Summer residential water use increases up to 200%. This is due primarily to lawn and garden watering and car washing.

Water Use Exemption Permits

During active water restrictions within City limits, there are some limited purposes that may be eligible to apply for a Water Use Exemption Permit, such as:

  • watering a new residential lawn or landscaping installation or construction
  • as a means of controlling dust, cleaning of a private driveway or parking lot with a metered Commercial or Multi-Residential zone
  • watering within a construction or building project under a Building or Development Permit issued by the City

Approved Water Use Exemption Permits are subject to a $10 fee and hours for sprinkling during active water restrictions must continue to be adhered to.
