Brandson Neighbourhood Park Renewal

Council has approved the final design for Brandson Neighbourhood Park. Check it out!

Final Park Design

Through two phases of public engagement, community members developed nine priorities for the Brandson Park renewal:

  1. A playground for all ages
  2. Washrooms and drinking water
  3. A green and lush area
  4. A park close to home
  5. The preservation of the park’s history
  6. Areas to rest
  7. Accessibility
  8. Water features
  9. A well-maintained park

More information on the public engagement can be found in the reports under the “Related Downloads” header on this page.

These priorities were used by our park designer Suttle Recreation to develop a final design for Brandson Park, which has now been approved by City Council.

Check out the headings below to see how community input influenced the park design. For more information on the engagement, check out the Related Downloads on the right.

  • 6 months-2 years: infant swing.
  • 2-5 years: swing set with one disc and one belt swing, and tot wing climber.
  • 5-12+ years: swing set with one disc and one belt swing, climbing tower with four climbing options and slide, overhead climber, and tot wing climber.

  • A water fountain is included in the design.
  • Previous conversations with council eliminated the washroom due to cost constraints. To keep within budget, several other elements would have had to be removed from the project, and it was decided that it was better to meet more priorities than fewer.

  • All five existing trees are preserved.
  • Nine new trees are proposed.
  • 45 square meters of new plantings are proposed.

The park is staying where it always is so the improvements will be enjoyed by Kinnaird residents.

Castlegar collected stories from community members and worked with Greg Nesteroff to develop the history of Branson Park. Check it out here: Brandson Park History.

  • 5 picnic tables included.
  • 3 benches included.
  • Green grass space has been preserved throughout the park.

  • Play equipment has elements that are accessible for users with varying abilities and incorporates texture and sensory play.
  • The stabilized aggregate pathway is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Two picnic tables are accessible.
  • Drinking fountain is compliant with the ADA.
  • Engineered wood fibre safety surfacing meets ADA requirements.
  • A recording of the historical signage was made to increase accessibility of people who may not be able to read the signage.

When the community was asked to prioritize park elements, water features rated low and have not been included.

Parks crews have had input into the operational considerations of the design.

Schedule

Construction will begin in spring 2026 and take approximately 12 weeks to complete.
