Brandson Neighbourhood Park Renewal

The City has now completed the public feedback process for the Brandson Park Renewal. Stay tuned to see the final design!

Public Engagement Process

We had three phases of public feedback to help us understand what the neighbourhood wanted to see in Brandson Park, and then help us prioritize their preferences and build the final vision. We also asked people to review the Brandson Park history, which can be viewed here: Brandson Park History as We Know It. If you see anything that needs to be changed, or is missing, please reach out to the contact on this page, or submit your information here: Share Brandson Park History.

Spring 2024: Phase 1 – Planning and Launch

During this phase, we planned how we were going to get feedback from the public, including creating advertising, planning events, and getting approval from council.

Spring 2024: Phase 2 – Dreaming of Big Ideas for Brandson Park

In the spring, we asked the public what they wanted to see in Brandson Park. We published a survey for people to complete online, and held an in-person event at Brandson Park. We had around 110 responses to the survey, and 90 attendees to the in-person “Picnic in the Park”. This helped us understand the park elements people wanted to see the most, and we ended up with nine key things that were important:

  1. Close to Home
  2. Playgrounds for All Ages
  3. Rest areas
  4. Water Features
  5. Green and lush
  6. Washrooms and drinking water
  7. History to preserve
  8. Accessibility
  9. Maintenance

For more information, you can read the full “Phase 2 What We Heard Report” shared under the “Related Links” section.

Fall 2024: Phase 3 – Prioritizing Possibilities and Building the Vision

Using the ideas from our Spring engagement, we drafted three concepts for Brandson Park that each address several of the key themes. We didn’t ask people to vote for a favourite. Instead, we asked the public to compare and contrast each concept to hear what was most important to see in the final design. People voted for their top key themes, and shared what they liked and disliked about each concept, and whether we were missing anything.

Winter 2024: Finalizing the Plan

Our consultant is summarizing all the feedback from our Phase 3 engagement into a “Phase 3 What We Heard Report”. Then they will use that information to create a new, fourth concept that will be finalized and constructed in the spring of 2025.

About the Brandson Neighbourhood Park Renewal & Engagement Process

The Park is adjacent to a mixed-use residential development currently under construction. When Council approved this development in 2022, it committed to:

  • Dedicating the space as Park land under Section 30 of the Community Charter.
  • Engaging the community to determine what the community prefers in terms of the park space; and
  • Reaching out to local historians and community members to capture the history of the park and commemorate the story on site

The City will engage the community in each stage of the decision making, including the development of conceptual options and the identification of preferred design solutions. We will look to the community for advice and innovation in formulating park elements and design and incorporate advice and recommendations into decisions to the maximum extent possible.

Key Objectives for this Project

  • The community knows how its input will shape the renewal of Brandson Park and the City’s decision-making.
  • The community understands the spatial and budgetary constraints.
  • Possibilities for the Park are presented in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • The historical value of Brandson Park is preserved and celebrated.
  • Excitement for the future is created with a community-shaped asset that accessible and inclusive for everyone.
