Quarterly Newsletter – October 2024

Four times a year the City of Castlegar publishes a newsletter that is distributed to all homes with our quarterly utility bills. Here’s what to know in Castlegar this quarter.

Pumpkins Go in Your Organics Cart

Halloween waste doesn’t have to be scary! Place your Halloween pumpkins in your curbside organics cart. Just be sure to remove any candles or battery-operated lights.

Leave the Leaves

Before you start raking, remember leaves are beneficial! Fall leaves are a nursery to butterflies and bees and a free source of mulch and fertilizer. Research shows leaving a thin layer of mulched leaves over winter can boost soil and lawn health. Just run the mower over the leaves and allow them to break down naturally or consider using them as mulch for garden beds and around trees and shrubs. If you must keep your lawn leaf-free, find space to pile them to naturally decompose, place them in your curbside organics cart or drop off them off for free at the City’s Yard Waste Disposal Site at the Castlegar and District Community Complex at 2101 6th Avenue. More info at castlegar.ca/curbside.

Food for Thought

Fats can block sewer pipes, which can be costly to replace or repair. Instead, place small amounts of fats and grease into your curbside organics cart. Did you know fats come in all shapes and forms?

  • Dairy products: yogurt, margarine, shortening, gravy
  • Oil: cooking oils, salad dressing, mayonnaise
  • Grease: animal fats from cooking meats

Did you know Castlegar has had almost a 50% reduction in garbage weights since organics collection started? Keep up the great work! More info at castlegar.ca/curbside.

Weather-Proof your Flight

In 2023, Air Canada introduced a pilot project to provide a shuttle as an alternative travel solution for passengers affected by weather-related flight cancellations, ensuring continued travel options through Kelowna. Due to its success in serving over 1,300 passengers and increasing journey completion rate to 90%, Air Canada has extended the service until April 30, 2025. This is the only service of its kind within Air Canada’s network and represents its strong commitment to providing dependable options for the region. To book a flight visit aircanada.com.
